These are days of remembrance in Kukës. 23 years ago, in the spring of 1999, over 1 million Kosovo Albanians crossed the border into Albania.
530 thousand were sheltered in Kukës, and the rest in northern Macedonia and Montenegro. Kukes returned to the limelight as hundreds of foreign media liaison offices were set up in the previously unknown small northeastern town. local journalists remember how colleagues came not only from all over the country but from all over the world.
“Thousands of foreign media and journalists settled in Kukës, where they jointly report any information. After the events of 1997 the 1999 exodus was different as a news item needed clarification in some sources. They had to report painful news to foreign media. “That period is a golden age, a time when the profession of journalist was further strengthened.”
Today, on April 16, in the place where the tents that would accommodate thousands of Albanians began to be set up, an obelisk is erected, built as a sign of gratitude to the Albanian people. But the obelisk tower is simply a symbol because for the small town of Kukes the exodus is as alive as it happened yesterday.
