Russia’s attacks sparked a fierce cover-up Tuesday in eastern Ukraine, where Ukrainian resistance groups are denying Moscow full military control of the region, almost four months after the Kremlin launched an offensive.
“Today everything that can be burned has caught fire,” stated Serhiy Haidai, the governor of the eastern Luhanks region.
Russia’s war has raised alarm over food supplies from Ukraine to the rest of the world and gas supplies from Russia, and has raised questions about security in Western Europe.
The Russian military currently controls about 95% of the Luhansk region. But Moscow has struggled for weeks to completely occupy it, despite deploying additional troops and having a huge advantage in military assets.
In the town of Severodonjeck, one of the hotspots of the fighting, Ukrainian troops have managed to resist the Nitrogen chemical plant, which is also housing hundreds of civilians. According to Governor Serhiy Haidiai, Russian forces are turning the area into “ruins”.
“It’s a real disaster,” Haidai told the Associated Press. “Our positions are constantly being hit by mortars, numerous rocket launchers, large-caliber artillery, rocket attacks.”
The defense of the chemical plant brought to mind the battle for the besieged Azovstal steel plant in the occupied city of Mariupol, where Ukrainian troops had been trapped for weeks.
Lysychansk, the only city in the Luhansk region that is still fully under Ukrainian control, is also the target of numerous airstrikes.
The office of Ukraine’s president announced on Tuesday that at least six civilians had been killed in the past 24 hours and 16 others had been injured.
According to the latest update, Russian forces also bombed the northern region of Chernihiv during the day, and intensified bombing in Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv. Explosions were also heard in the southern city of Mikolaiv.
The airstrikes in Severodonjeck and Lysychansk destroyed more than ten apartment buildings and a police station. In the town of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region, a school was set on fire as a result of the bombing, the president’s office said.
