380 prisoners serving sentences in the IECD of the Republic of Albania will have the opportunity to be employed in the prison administration, but also in the private sector, under the new law on the rights and treatment of prisoners.
It was the Minister of Justice, Ulsi Manja, and the General Director of Prisons who launched this Tuesday the new project for the employment of convicts in the Institutions for the Execution of Criminal Judgments.
“There are 380 convicts as the first phase that will be employed in the IECD of the republic. Today we start with Durrës, where the first 15 convicts have started working. It is an ambitious program, implemented for the first time with the new law on the rights and treatment of convicts“, Said Minister Manja.
He explained that the employment of persons serving sentences in Albanian institutions will not only be in the prison administration, but also in the private sector.
“It is being discussed in Fier prison to employ 200 convicts in the private sector, as well as 70 convicts in the Reçi Penitentiary Institution. In total as I said there will be 380 employees in this first phase. Regarding employment in cooperation with the private sector, we are in talks with many companies, mainly in the field of tailoring“, Said the minister.
He also explained the method of payment that will be made according to the decision of the Council of Ministers, where employees in the prison administration and who are paid with the fund of the General Directorate of Prisons will have 25 percent of the salary of the function they perform, while Private sector employees will be paid the minimum wage.
Under the old legal framework, the work of convicts was rewarded with deductions for sentence days. Only convicts with a final decision can be included in the employment project.
