The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that Russia’s presence on the border with Ukraine was worrying, that all diplomatic opportunities had been used to prevent a possible military conflict between the two countries, and that harsh sanctions would be imposed on Russia in the event of a possible military conflict.
Michel made these comments after meeting with the Prime Minister of Austria, Karl Nehammer, on which occasion he said that Russia’s presence on the border with Ukraine is worrying.
He announced that diplomatic talks have started in various formats while drawing attention to acting in unity within the EU regarding the tensions in question, reports atsh.
“We all want to be prepared in the event of a military strike. In such a situation we will be forced to apply very harsh sanctions. “We do not want this but we will never bow down when it comes to protecting our stability and security,” said Michel.
He noted that through diplomacy serious efforts have been made to reduce tensions and to achieve a result while underlining that if tensions are not resolved through diplomacy it is necessary within the EU to act in a united and determined manner as and ensure a unity to respond.
“A threat against Ukraine means Europe even more,” said Michel, who added that they are in solidarity with the sovereignty and territorial integrity of this country and that despite very disturbing developments, they are trying to find a diplomatic solution to the problem.
