The unemployment rate in the European Union rose to 7.3 percent in January, from 6.6 percent year-on-year, the bloc’s statistics office announced.
The unemployment rate in the Eurozone also rose from 7.4 percent to 8.1 percent in the first month of 2021 on an annual basis, according to the Eurostat announcement.
The Eurozone or ZE19 represents the member countries that use the single currency – the euro, while the EU27 includes all the member countries of the bloc. Eurostat said nearly 15.7 million people in the EU27, including 13.28 million in the eurozone, have been unemployed since January.
The number of unemployed persons increased by 29 thousand on a monthly basis increasing by 1.46 million on an annual basis in January across the bloc.
“The spread of COVID-19 and the measures taken to combat it have caused a sharp increase in the number of unemployment benefit applications across the EU,” it said.
Meanwhile, there are about 2.93 million unemployed under the age of 25 in the EU in January, bringing the youth unemployment rate to 16.9 percent.
