Commenting on the position of officials in Serbia, EU spokesman Peter Stano said that the denial or modification of the Recak Massacre, in which 45 Albanian civilians were killed, was contrary to the values ​​of the European Union and the Western Balkans integration project.

“We reiterate that there is no place to deny or underestimate what happened in Recak”, said Stano.

Stano added that the EU calls on the authorities throughout the region to work for a sincere and true assessment of the past, as according to him, the region needs reconciliation, stability and normalization of relations.

On January 15, 1999, Serb police and military forces in Kosovo killed 45 Albanian civilians in the village of Recak in the municipality of Shtime.

The crimes committed in this village were documented by the then head of the observation mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, William Walker.

The Recak event was followed by NATO bombing of Serb targets in Kosovo as well as in Serbia.
