The conflict in Ukraine has accelerated decision-making with dizzying steps in Brussels.
Decisions that normally took months to get approved are now getting the green light within hours. “We have no time for bureaucratic procedures in war,” said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. The bloc’s energy ministers suddenly decided at a quick emergency meeting in Brussels to include Ukraine in the European Electricity Grid. Ukraine should disconnect from the joint network with Russia and Belarus as soon as possible, they said.
From the point of view of the EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, there is no other solution. The associations of European grid operators and supervisory authorities in the EU must now consider within a few days how the European power grid can be connected to Ukraine, which gets most of its electricity from four nuclear reactors. After all, it’s about 40 million new customers.
Currently, Russia can massively restrict electricity supplies to Ukraine because Russian authorities control, for example, the voltage and frequency in the grid, which dates back to Soviet times. Canada meanwhile announced it would cut off Russian oil imports. Prime Minister Justin Trudeaux said oil revenues have helped strengthen the positions of President Vladimir Putin and Russian oligarchs. Unlike Europe, Canada is not so heavily dependent on Russian energy imports, and its move is considered more symbolic.
The United States has long insisted that the old continent lift its dependence on Russian energy, and has offered to supply Europe with its liquefied natural gas.
