Western leaders plan to discuss in the coming days the crisis triggered by the gathering of thousands of Russian troops on the borders and in areas around Ukraine.
The German Foreign Ministry confirmed on February 16 that the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries will hold an emergency meeting in Munich on February 19.
The talks will be chaired by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. These talks will be held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, which takes place from 18 to 20 February.
Meanwhile, European Union leaders are expected to discuss the crisis on February 17, Reuters reports, citing European bloc officials.
“The leaders will meet in Brussels for the African summit and they also wanted to talk about the crisis on the Ukrainian border, update the data, share information and views,” an EU official told Reuters.
Russia has amassed 150,000 troops in areas around the border with Ukraine, raising fears it is preparing to invade the country.
Moscow has repeatedly said it has no plans to invade Ukraine and has said it is conducting military exercises on its territory.
The G7 includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan and Italy.
