Annoyed by the strict anti-Covid measures imposed by their government, the Dutch have flocked to neighboring Belgium to spend the festive moment there, despite calls from authorities not to cross the border.
The Netherlands has imposed perhaps the harshest winter restrictions in Europe, closing all non-essential shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas, museums and theaters until January 14 in a bid to stem a new massive wave of infections from Omicron.
In contrast, the measures in Belgium are much milder, despite the fact that even here there is a fear of a new surge of infections. Dutch visitors have filled Anver’s cafes and shops, rushing to make as many purchases as possible before returning home.
For local businesses, this was very good news.
The Belgian news agency Belga reported that more than 7,600 Dutch visitors traveled to Anvera on Wednesday alone.
