Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues his efforts to position himself as a mediator between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the West.
He spoke by telephone with US President Joe Biden, where they discussed the common concern about Russia’s unwarranted invasion of Ukraine.
A White House statement said the two leaders reaffirmed their strong support for the government and people of Ukraine and underlined the need for an immediate end to Russian aggression.
President Biden praised Turkey’s efforts to support a diplomatic solution to the conflict, as well as Turkey’s recent engagements with regional leaders that help promote peace and stability, the statement said.
Earlier in the day, a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dimitry Kuleba took place in Antalya, Turkey, but ended without an agreement.
Russia has escalated attacks on civilians as Ukrainians rushed to flee through evacuation corridors. On Wednesday evening the Russians bombed a maternity hospital in Mariupol, where it is reported that so far at least 17 people have been injured and three have died.
