Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Turkey will fully support Kosovo’s membership in NATO.
After a meeting with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, the Turkish head of state stated that his country “does not need anyone’s permission to support the NATO membership process. “We have taken steps, as we did in the case of recognition, we will also do for the process of Kosovo’s membership in NATO”, said President Erdogan.
The Serbian presidency reacted immediately, saying that the Serbian Foreign Ministry had prepared a protest note. “Whether we will deliver it or not (that note) will be decided tonight. “Of course, we do not see this as a friendly move,” said Aleksandar Vucic. Earlier, Osmani had openly stated that Serbia posed a threat to Kosovo and was not neutral, while insisting on the country’s membership in NATO.
The armed conflict in Ukraine has once again highlighted the danger that threatens Kosovo as well. The fact that four members of this Western alliance have not yet recognized Kosovo’s independence hinders its membership, and even participation in military partnership activities.
President Osmani also stressed before the Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg that “Kosovo’s goal is to become part of the global security infrastructure and contribute to peace.”
