Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed that he tested positive for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
Through a Twitter post, Erdogan said that both he and his wife have had mild symptoms of the disease so far and added that he will continue working from home.
“We are waiting for your prayers”, wrote the head of the Turkish state.
In November last year, Turkish authorities investigated 30 people who were accused of posting misinformation on social media about Erdogan’s health. Turkish police said at the time that these individuals had posted “manipulative content” on Twitter using the hashtag #olmous.
This hashtag began to be used as speculation about Erdogan’s health increased, so the Turkish president’s aides tried to suppress them by distributing images of his various activities.
Allusions of this nature have in fact been circulating for years. Rival politicians who oppose Erdogan’s government have often questioned the President’s health.
