The European Parliament has approved EU candidate status for Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
In total, 529 votes were received in support of the resolution on the status of the three countries, while 45 votes against the proposal. 14 other politicians abstained.
Although it shows widespread support for countries’ bid to join the EU, the final decision rests with European leaders.
Ahead of talks in the EU, in which his country is likely to be granted candidate status, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who applied for membership at the start of the war, said: “This is like going from light to darkness.” .
Candidate status is the beginning of the slow process of qualifying for EU membership, which can take more than a decade to achieve.
