German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron called for an immediate ceasefire in a phone call they had with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a German government official said.
The two leaders also told the Russian head of state that any solution to the war in Ukraine must be reached through negotiations. The three agreed to stay in close contact in the coming days, the official added.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the German chancellor has spoken several times by telephone with President Putin. The Kremlin announced that in their last phone call on Wednesday they talked about “politico-diplomatic efforts” to resolve the conflict. Putin also spoke with Scholz about the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations. It has been agreed to continue contacts at various levels, the Kremlin said.
The Moscow-Kiev negotiating groups also held a third round of talks Monday in Belarus, but made no significant progress. Scholz immediately again refused to supply Ukraine with MiG-29 fighter jets from the North Atlantic Alliance. “Every effort should be made so that the war does not extend to NATO,” he said.
