Tesla owner Elon Musk says that if his offer to buy Twitter is successful, he will cancel the suspension of former US President Donald Trump from this platform.
The richest man in the world agreed to a $ 44 billion bid with his Twitter board last month.
But he said it was not a final deal and that ideally the deal would be finalized in the next two to three months.
Twitter’s decision to ban the former US president was “morally wrong and absolutely stupid,” Musk told the Financial Times Summit “The Future of the Car.”
In January 2021, Twitter said former President Donald Trump’s account had been “permanently suspended… because of the risk of further escalation of violence” following riots in which protesters attacked US government buildings in Washington.
Musk told the Financial Times: “I would cancel the permanent suspension, but I do not have Twitter yet, so this is not something that will definitely happen.”
He said the suspension had not silenced former President Trump, but by making him move on his social network Truth Social, he had amplified his voice in the far right.
He noted that Mr. Trump had previously said he would not return to Twitter even if his account were restored.
Musk said he had spoken to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey about the issue of closing user accounts in response to offensive posts.
“He and I share the view that permanent bans should be extremely rare and reserved for accounts that are fake accounts,” Musk said.
Musk said that if someone posts something “illegal or otherwise destructive to the world”, they should be temporarily suspended or the posting should be made invisible.
He said Twitter needs to build more trust by sharing its algorithm and asking people to make suggestions on how to improve it.
