Firefighters in Michigan, USA fought yesterday with the flames in the exclusive more than 100-year-old golf complex in Detroit that hosted some of the biggest tournaments in the world, but could not stop its destruction.
Employees were seen struggling to put out the blaze at the Oakland Hills golf club which had engulfed the entire complex. There were no reports of injuries from the incident in buildings built since 1920.
The exclusive club had a membership of 750 and was adorned with precious memories of the tournaments held at it over a century ago, the Detroit Free Press network reported.
Police said they are investigating the causes of the fire.
The club opened in 1916 and hosted the last amateur event of American golfer Tiger Woods in 1996, and more than 12 major tournaments since then.
The complex had just completed a more than $ 12 million restoration and hosted the tournament won by Padraig Harrington in 2008 as well as the Ryder Cup in 2006.
It was recently announced that the Oakland Hills would host the Women’s Open golf championship in 2031 and 2042.
