Centrist politician Elisabeth Borne was named France’s new prime minister on May 16, becoming the second woman to hold the post.
Borne, 61, who served as labor minister in the previous government, succeeds Jean Castex, whose resignation was expected following the re-election of French President Emmanuel Macron last month.
Macron and Borne are expected to appoint members of the new Government in the coming days.
As Minister of Labor since 2020, Borne has implemented changes that have made it harder for the unemployed to receive benefits and cut monthly payments for some unemployed, prompting criticism from workers’ unions and the left.
In 2018, as Minister of Transport, Borne had faced major strikes by the rail transport company SNCF after workers had opposed plans to open a new railway network, which was seen as competitive, and opposed the policy of terminating life benefits. for young workers. Even after much criticism, she managed to pass a bill with these changes.
Borne previously also worked as the chief of staff of the socialist politician, Ségolène Royal, and held the post of Minister of Ecology during the time when Francois Hollande was president.
In 2015 she had become chief executive of the state-owned transport company, RATP, which operates the Paris Metro.
In 2017, she joined Macron’s centrist party. In Macron’s first government she was initially appointed Minister of Transport and later of the Department of Ecological Transition.
Borne is the second woman prime minister, after Edith Cresson, to serve in the post from 1991-1992 during the tenure of Socialist President Francois Mitterrand.
