Eight people dealing with the health care of the Argentine soccer star Diego Maradonawill be tried for his murder, after the decision issued last night after extensive investigations into the cardiac arrest that took the life of one of the most beloved athletes in the world, at the age of 60.
The 236-page document was studied by Reuters, in which it is said that the judge decides that “the active or inactive behavior of each of the accused has resulted in or contributed to the achievement of the hurtful result”.
The ruling says eight people, including doctors, nurses and psychologists who cared for Maradona at the time of his death in 2020, are charged with “simple murder,” which in Argentine law means intentional taking of life.
The medical board investigating Maradona’s death last year concluded that his medical team had acted “incorrectly, deficiently and carelessly”.
Maradona is considered one of the greatest footballers in history and had nicknames like “Pelusa” for long hair, or in Spain where he was known as “D10S” in a letter game where the word “God” is formed.
After a sports career he had problems with drugs and alcohol but was also known for “unpopular” political statements in defense of the most suffering people or peoples and in opposition to the ruling classes.
Mario Baudry, the lawyer for one of Maradona’s sons, said that at the time of his death, the footballer was “in a state of despair. He died on November 25, 2020.
“As soon as I saw the report on the causes, I realized it was a premeditated murder,” he said.
Prosecutors in Argentina began investigating after his death and conducted dozens of searches at various properties of the accused, until they came to the shocking verdict of murder.
The accused are: Maradona’s neurosurgeon and personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque; psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov; psychologist, Carlos Diaz; two nurses Gisella Madrid and Ricardo Almiron; head nurse Mariano Perroni; and two doctors, Pedro Di Spagna and Nancy Forlini.
Reuters did not comment further on the contacts with the defendants or their lawyers.
