The branches of economics and law continue to attract the vast majority of students even though the market is oversupplied for these professions.
But official INSTAT data show some interesting trends of increasing interest to study in branches that manage health like Medicine and Nursing and Engineering during the current academic year 2021-2022. On the other hand for the largest branch of the economy, Agriculture not only are very few students interested in pursuing studies, but their number is declining rapidly.
Official data show that in this academic year 123,880 students complete their bachelor studies, an increase of 0.1% compared to last year, but with a decrease of 6% compared to the academic year 2017-2018. Within the total number of students in some branches there is an increase in the number and in some others there is a drastic decrease.
According to the fields of study, “Business, Administration and Law” had in their branches this year 32,337 students with an annual increase of 3.4% and 6.6% compared to four years ago. This field of study has absorbed 26% of the total students, staying for years at the top of preferences even though the market needs for these professions are oversaturated.
In this academic year, the largest increase in the number of students had the field of study “Engineering, production and construction” with about 22 thousand students or 18.2 percent of the total with an increase of 10% compared to a year ago and 20% with four years ago.
The second area with the highest annual increase in the number of students was “Health and Welfare” with 4.4% in this academic year and 11.6% compared to four years ago. The branches of medicine and nursing are attracting a large number of students based on the best employment prospects abroad.
On the other hand, over the course of an academic year, a strong decline is being seen in the fields of education, agriculture and natural sciences.
INSTAT found that in this year the academy the number of students suffered the largest decrease of 19% for “Agriculture, forestry, fishing and veterinary”, while with a report four years ago in these branches the number of students has shrunk by 39%.
After agriculture, the largest annual decline was for the branches of social sciences and journalism by 10.4%, while compared to four years ago, the decline was 24%.
In natural sciences in this academic year the total number of students decreased by -7.5% and four years ago 28% and also. In the services sector there was an annual contraction of -4.5% of students, but they are still 41% more than in 2017./ Monitor
