The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warned on Wednesday (December 15th) that vaccination alone will not be able to stop the rush of the new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron.
This agency of the European Union has said that there is an urgent need for action.
“In the current situation, vaccination alone will not be able to prevent the effect of the Omicron variant because there will be no time to address the deficiencies in vaccination that still exist,” said Andrea Ammon, director of the ECDC.
The agency has meanwhile raised the risk rating of Omicron’s effect on public health to “very high”.
The agency has called for the strengthening and resumption of non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as wearing masks, hand hygiene, distance to work and preventing gatherings in public spaces.
“It is urgent that strong action be taken to reduce transmission and ease the pressure on the health system, to protect the most vulnerable groups in the coming months,” Ammon added.
The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Tuesday (December 14th) that the Omicron variant has been reported in 77 countries and is likely to have spread to most countries, undetected “at a rate we have not seen in variants.” others”.
Tedros also warned that Omicron should not be called “easy”, because according to him, although this variant causes milder diseases, “the number of cases can overload the health system.”
