The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in a post on Twitter, emphasized that talks should begin for North Macedonia’s accession to the European Union.
According to him, North Macedonia is deciding for itself already and that its future is in the EU.
“Last week, the EU Council presented a revised compromise solution. This is a balanced solution that addresses your main concerns. The goal is clear: the start of talks on the accession of North Macedonia. And finally move forward to build our common future in the EU.
You are deciding your future. And in the main next steps. North Macedonia is part of the EU. Your future is with us. Together we are on the verge of a possible progress in your country’s EU membership process”, writes Michel.
He also commented on the French proposal, stressing that Macedonian is their language and that this proposal respects it.
“The important thing is that this proposal is clearly related to the Macedonian language, without qualification from the EU. Macedonian is your language. The proposal respects that. EU legislation will all be translated into the Macedonian language.”
“You are an example of how a multi-ethnic country can progress. We are also very aware of the concerns expressed by some regarding your national identity. You can count on me as President of the European Council to systematically defend your legitimate rights.”
