The European Commission has sent an official notice to Poland, asking it to pay a fine of around 70 million euros for illegal disciplinary proceedings against judges, Commission spokesman Christian Wiegand said today.
The commission said that the Polish disciplinary system allows political interference in the courts and thus violates the laws in force in the EU, as well as in Poland, which provide for the independence of the judiciary, reports Reuters.
The EC spokesman said a “call for payment” had now been sent to Warsaw after it had not lifted the disciplinary regime by order of the European Court of Justice.
Unnamed sources claim that the Commission will give Warsaw 45 days to make the payment.
Poland’s dispute with the EU is already costing Warsaw large sums of money, as it has blocked Poland’s access to billions of euros in European funds earmarked for COVID-19 economic recovery.
