“It was scary, it did not happen to anyone,” said residents of Stolac, the epicenter of the 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck southern Bosnia on Friday night.
Earthquakes were felt throughout the Balkans, as residents recounted the fear they experienced in those moments, most of them spending the night in cars.
27-year-old Elmira Sefo, who was injured when a stone fell on her house, died at the hospital, said medical sources quoted by the media.
The local portal “Stolac.com” has shared on its Facebook page a photo of the victim Elmira with the message “Mercy for your beautiful soul”.
Several other people were slightly injured, including members of the victim’s family. The quake tore down walls and caused property damage in several other localities, including Mostar and the town of Ljubinje, according to local and civil defense authorities.
The quake was shallow and the epicenter was recorded 14 kilometers northeast of Ljubinje, according to the US Geological Survey.
It is up to Belgrade, Zagreb and Skopje, more than 400 kilometers from the epicenter, but there were strong earthquakes in our country and even as far as southern Italy. The quake was followed by several aftershocks, which according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center “are likely to continue in the coming hours and days.”
The Balkans are prone to seismic activity and earthquakes are frequent. Yesterday he recalled the earthquake of November 26, 2019, which magnitude 6.4 made the most powerful that hit the country in four decades.
51 people lost their lives and over 3,000 others were injured, while a large number of homes were destroyed or damaged. The biggest damages were in the city of Durrës and the village of Kodër-Thumana, which were located closer to the epicenter of the earthquake.
In December a year later, an earthquake of the same magnitude struck Croatia’s Petrinja region, near the capital Zagreb, killing seven people and destroying hundreds of buildings and houses. In March of that year, it was Zagreb that was hit by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake which caused extensive damage.
