Last night, for 60 minutes, in Skanderbeg Square, the lights went out and as a sign of solidarity, 60 candles were lit by the young people who had filled the square, who formed the flag with the inscription “Peace for Ukraine”.
The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj said that this is a very important moment of reflection for the protection of our common home, the Earth, but also to give the message of peace everywhere in the world. “There are many people who, perhaps, see what is happening in Ukraine as something distant, that does not affect us. Since it is “Earth Hour” and since it is the day when we take 60 minutes and turn off the main lights of the city, it is a way to reflect, to think that we are not a lonely island, that we are not affected by things that happen in the world . When Russia invades Ukraine it is a war that affects us, the global market, the stock market, the price of oil, the price of gas. Perhaps, today we are not able to stop a war, our small Albania, our modest Tirana, is not the main actor who can stop the war, but he is a modest actor who can give a message. I believe that the boys and girls of our gymnasiums, of our high school, have given a super mass today and it deserves all our applause and support, “said Veliaj.
He added that this war and its consequences should serve us all to change the approach to lifestyle even in view of a lifestyle in a healthier environment.
“Today is probably the moment for everyone to reflect, not only for those institutions that have become part, for those organizations Tirana, the European Youth Capital, all associations that deal with the environment every day, but maybe it is the moment to reflect as people, as citizens , as consumers. The way we treat the environment, the way we treat excessive use of cars, the way we create an extraordinary dependence on vehicles, is a way we either contribute to war, or we contribute to peace. Today where we understand that both world prices, stock exchanges, and bargains made for a barrel of oil, take into account consumer behavior, take into account the dependence we have on cars, take into account our lifestyle, maybe this is a moment that we to reflect a little.
If there are some distances we can do on foot, if there are some trips we can do by bus, if there are some roads we can do by bike, to a place that God has blessed with 300 days sun, then each of us can make a small contribution. Today we are not required to take up arms and fight in Ukraine, but today it is required that this dependence we have on an oil and gas industry can very well become an independence from our way of life, our style of consumption and the way how we walk and travel in Tirana.

The Earth Hour Initiative originated in 2007 in Sydney and was proposed by the World Wilde Life Fund. Dozens of world capitals joined the project by turning off the lights for an hour in government offices or tourist spots and state symbols.
