Residents of Durrës district have the highest number of vehicles in relation to the population, for 2020, according to INSTAT data. In Durrës there are registered a total of about 72.1 thousand vehicles, or 247 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants. The second place is occupied by Tirana with 218 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants, followed by Gjirokastra (210), Vlora (194), Shkodra (192).
The counties that have fewer cars in relation to the population are Korça (128) and Dibra with 124. In absolute value, the highest number of road vehicles is registered in the district of Tirana for 2020, accounting for 36.8% of road vehicles total registered in the country.
INSTAT reports the total number of road vehicles with “active” and “temporarily deregistered” status. Other data from the General Directorate of Road Transport Services show that last year Albania had about 540 thousand vehicles that circulated regularly, a figure based on the payment of the annual traffic tax. This would translate into a number of about 192 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants.
With this figure, Albania is far from the least motorized countries of the EU and the penultimate in Europe, surpassing only Turkey (150 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants). Northern Macedonia had 205 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants. Data for Kosovo are for 2017, and this indicator for that year was less than 100. According to Eurostat data, in 2019 Romania had 357 passenger vehicles per 1000 inhabitants, followed by Latvia with 381 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants and Hungary with 390 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants. In the EU, the countries with the highest level of motorization are Luxembourg, with 681 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants, followed by Italy with 663 vehicles and Cyprus with 645 vehicles.
Benz, the most favorite car
German brands remain the most favorite for Albanians for the cars they use. According to INSTAT, out of about 540 thousand cars in the country until the end of 2000, about 98 thousand, or 18.2% were Mercedes Benz, ranking first. In second place is Volkswagen, with 91.7 thousand vehicles, or 17% of the total.
While dominating the road, Benz cars are the oldest. According to INSTAT, until December 2020, the “Mercedes Benz” brand is registered as the most used car brand registered with the year of production before 2000 and the years 2011-2020. The “Volkswagen” brand is registered as the most widespread car brand with a production year of 2000-2010.
Generally, the cars circulating in the country are old, or very old. According to INSTAT, 26% of the cars circulating in the country were manufactured before 2000, or more than 20 years old.
