A U.S. Navy warship was forced to issue fireworks signals at an Iranian military boat approaching frighteningly in the Strait of Hormuz, the fleet announced today.
Yesterday’s incident between the US warship Sirocco comes at a time of tension as the Islamic Republic seeks to salvage its 2015 nuclear deal after the West imposed economic sanctions that have made life difficult for many Iranians.
“Three naval vessels of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps acted with unsafe and unprofessional tactics in the Strait of Hormuz,” the US Navy said in a statement.
“One of the vehicles quickly approached the Sirocco warship head-on and changed course only when it gave an audible signal to avoid the collision.”
“The Iranian vehicle approached up to 45 meters from the American ship and Siroco reacted by firing warning fireworks.”
The incident comes after the US seized two Iranian carriers and Greek waters to which Iran responded by seizing two Greek-flagged tankers in the Persian Gulf.
Yesterday’s incident lasted about an hour and ended when Iranian vehicles left the area, the navy said.
