The Swedish Coast Guard today continued work near the island of Vinga to extinguish a massive fire involving a Liberian-flagged timber carrier.
The fire on the carrier Almirante Storni broke out in the Swedish archipelago of Gothenburg, the coast guard reported.
The flames had started right on her plank load and the attempt to extinguish it proved difficult, authorities said.
Seventeen crew members of the ship remain on board along with several Swedish Coast Guard officers who have gone for help.
No injuries were reported from the carrier and the vehicle is still operational, authorities said.
The Coast Guard said it had deployed at the scene of the accident powerful naval vessels, water-launches and tugs of the Holding Gmb company.
