A total of 40 people are reported to have died today as families were crushed to death during a religious service in Nigeria where free gifts and food were also offered.
The horrific incident occurred during an event at King’s Church in the southern coastal city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
Among the victims were women and children.
A witness said the incident occurred during the Free Shopping program, where gifts and food were distributed as gifts for the fourth anniversary of the Church.
People had started coming to church early for the event even though it was supposed to start at 9.00
Around 08.00 the gathered crowds entered the indoor premises after attending the members of a sporting event.
Local network Punch said most of the victims were taken to Port Harcourt Military Hospital.
A source said: “The incident happened this morning, the church invited members for the fourth anniversary gifts but people had gathered since 06.30”
“When the crowds saw an opportunity to enter through a narrow gate, the people crushed each other.”
“I counted 21 dead bodies on the ground.
“This is not the first time the church has held this program, or the crowd was very large. They said free gifts and food would be distributed. “It’s very painful.”
Police have confirmed the incident but not the exact number of victims.
