Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Special Envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar arrived in Albania today and met with European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi. They agreed that Russia’s unwarranted occupation of Ukraine has made integration even more urgent. They discussed the joint priority of Albania and Northern Macedonia’s integration into the European Union and Assistant Secretary Donfried reaffirmed the United States’ strong support for Albania’s membership in the European Union, and said the US remains committed to working with Albanian partners and of the EU to ensure justice reform in Albania and the successful path to the European Union.
