The number one tennis player in the world, Serbian Novak Djokovic, is free to leave the hotel where he is being held since Thursday in the city of Melbourne.
Australian Home Secretary Karen Andrews has responded to allegations by Noles’s family members that he is being held hostage, that he could return to his country of origin at any time.
Djokovic arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday after Australian Open organizers relieved him of the obligation to indicate whether he had been vaccinated, but local authorities are keeping him in a hotel after deciding not to allow him to enter Australia in violation of health protocol.
“Z. “Djokovic is not being held hostage in Australia, he is free to leave at any time, he just wants to do it and the border forces will certainly help him,” said Minister Andrews in an interview with Australian public broadcaster ABC.
The comment comes after the Serbian Foreign Ministry on Thursday presented a formal protest to the Australian ambassador to Serbia, Daniel Emery, for the “inappropriate treatment” that the tennis player is receiving in Melbourne.
