The Tunisian Ministry of Defense had deployed anti-pollution naval cordons today around the site of the sinking of an oil tanker.
The shipwreck off the southeast coast of Tunisia was loaded with 750 tonnes of fuel but so far no trace of leakage has been observed, according to authorities.
The Equatorial Guinea-flagged carrier sank on Saturday in the Gulf of Gabes, at a depth of about 20 meters, the environment ministry said.
The inspections were carried out by divers accompanied by the ship’s captain and engineer, said local spokesman Mohamed Karray.
The vehicle was sailing from Egypt to Malta when the unexplained accident occurred.
The Tunisian military showed underwater footage of the sunken vehicle on the side as divers inspected for possible contaminant leaks.
The crew had sounded the alarm on Friday night and had approached Tunisian waters to protect themselves from bad weather before they sank.
Local Transport Minister Rabie Maxhidi said the crew had checked the closure of fuel tanks before the sinking.
The development is the latest in similar incidents involving maritime transport of sunken fuels at a time of energy crisis since the war.
