At his small diamond exchange office in Tel Aviv, Pravin Kukadia proudly presents his collection of precious stones.
Between his homeland India, and his country of residence, Israel, diamonds are creating an important economic and diplomatic bond.
That trade is reaching $ 1.5 billion a year, reaching as much as half the total trade between the two countries, according to experts.
“India’s diamond industry accounts for 50 percent of trade between the two countries,” said Boaz Moldawsky, an Israeli industry representative.
“We export rough stones, and mainly import cut and processed stones,” he adds.
He goes on to say: “Relations between India and Israel were established 30 years ago. “We diamond traders have had contacts with colleagues in India since the 1970s.”
“Over the years we have built strong bonds between the two business communities and become friends.”
His Indian colleague Pravin Kukadia says he has been working with diamonds in Israel since 1997.
“Here I learned to work and clean large diamonds. “When we sent the stones bought in Israel to India, then we saw the full potential of cooperation.”
“We buy the diamonds here and send them to work at our factory in Sri Lanka, then bring them back to work here and distribute them to customers in Europe.”
