Prime Minister Edi Rama is in Puglia, Italy on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the exodus of Albanians to the neighboring country, where he is holding a conference with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and the head of the Puglia Region, Michele Emiliano.
During his speech, Di Maio expressed great support for Albania’s EU integration process, stressing that the European Union should not call itself United if Albania is outside it.
He stressed that the EU must make a historic choice by rejecting prejudice and start enlargement vigorously.
The landing of the ship “Vlora” in the port of Bari, are episodes that have symbolic value for Albania. It is important for those born in Hoxha’s dictatorship to leave. The Albanian people managed to leave in the late ’80s, they were tired. The time today is fairer we have an example of a brotherly friendship that Albania and Italy had forged with each other. Our bond, which is already strong, finds support in the common Atlantic alliance, we can not but be satisfied, Europe itself can not call itself united if Albania is outside it. Italy will continue to engage until this process is completed as soon as possible. This decision must be implemented and everyone must reject their prejudices. “Europe must make a historic choice, it must start expanding rapidly, we are convinced today as we were 30 years ago when we decided to extend a hand to the Albanian people.”, said Di Maio.
