Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video message that Mariupol was being “reduced to ashes” by Russian military aggression, but that the city would survive.
In his speech, Zelensky went on to urge Ukrainians to “do everything they can to protect the country, to save the people.”
“Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in late February, we are seeing more and more Ukrainian heroes. “Once ordinary Ukrainians and now real fighters,” he said.
“Fight, keep fighting and help,” he urged Ukrainians.
Mariupol, which before the war was home to about 450,000 people, has been under constant attack by Russian forces since early March. On Monday, Josep Borrell said that “what is happening in Mariupol is a massive war crime.”
