Denmark became the first European Union country to lift all restrictions imposed on the coronavirus on February 1, despite the record number of cases downloaded from the Omicron variant.
This Scandinavian country is once again lifting the measure of wearing masks, vaccination certificate, restricting the work of bars and restaurants. Denmark had made an experiment by removing all restrictions even in September-November last year.
The nightclubs will reopen on September 1st and also unlimited number of people can participate in the indoor gatherings.
Only a few restrictions will be in place at state borders for unvaccinated travelers coming from countries outside the Schengen Area.
The decision to lift the restrictions comes despite Denmark reporting 40,000 to 50,000 daily infections, figures that make up almost 1 per cent of the population of 5.8 million.
Over 60 percent of Danes are vaccinated with the third dose. This figure is higher compared to the EU average which is less than 45 percent.
Including people who have recently been infected with COVID-19, Danish authorities estimate that 80 percent of the population is protected against severe forms of the disease.
The strategy of the Danish authorities enjoys widespread support within the country. According to a poll published on January 31 by the daily Politiken, 64 percent of Danes surveyed said they had faith in the Government’s policy regarding the pandemic.
As the number of hospitalizations is lower compared to previous waves of pandemics, some European countries, including France, Ireland and the United Kingdom have reported lifting restrictions or easing them, despite these countries recording high rates of new cases of COVID-19 disease.
According to the World Health Organization, 73 percent of the population in Europe has been infected with COVID-19 at least once since January 2020./REL
