Demonstrators took to the streets of Madrid yesterday ahead of the NATO summit to protest against the Western intergovernmental military alliance.
In their banners, the Spaniards made it clear that they did not want to fight in conflicts between states but to solve social and economic problems in each of their countries, writes the French network AFP.
“Twice as much money is being spent on weapons and militarization, which is taken from education, health and citizens,” said local protester Elena Zurita.
She added that the resources spent could be used on issues such as violence against women that has increased significantly in the last two years.
Student Gonzalo Fernandez called the alliance ‘a lie that has been imposed’ on the peoples of the countries.
“I think NATO is an imperialist organization based on a very different logic from where we are today,” he said, referring to the recent period of World War II.
“Spain is part of NATO but will never be integrated into the military structure, but only into the political structure of the group,” Fernandez added.
Fernando Jiménez, one of the event coordinators said:
“Here in Spain there is an American military base, and there is economic and military activity that influences our international strategy.”
“But the fact that Spain is part of a military alternative with possible conflict with other armies has an impact on the Spanish people,” he added.
