At the opening of his own Democracy Summit, US President Joe Biden said it was facing “enduring and alarming challenges” around the world.
The virtual summit is attended by leaders of 110 countries, including Kosovo.
According to Biden, the trends of democracy “are broadly going in the wrong direction”, therefore, he said that “democracy needs champions”.
“Democracy does not happen by accident. We need to renew it in every generation and in my opinion, this is an urgent issue for all of us“, Said Biden.
The Prime Minister Edi Rama was also a participant in the Summit, who said that it took Albania a long time to get out of complete isolation and become part of the community of democracy.
“In this journey, US support has been vital to advancing democratic aspirations, strengthening the rule of law. With its support and that of EU countries, we are clearing the judiciary of almost 70 percent of judges and prosecutors and are now in the process of rebuilding the judiciary, based on the models of consolidated democracies. However, Rama said that policies could be reversed, so Albania’s membership in the European Union would help consolidate democratic institutions.”.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, before the summit, said that groups operating across borders are “destabilizing” and often cooperate with government officials.
“We also know that organized crime, backed by corrupt actors, can destabilize the rule of law, undermine trust in public institutions, and weaken democratic governance.“, Said Blinken through a statement.
