Hours of horror have passed during midnight residents of a palace in Astir in whose garage during the evening unidentified persons are suspected of deliberately setting fire to 3 vehicles.
A fourth vehicle parked nearby was also engulfed in flames. Due to the plastics that were burned, the palace was engulfed in a large cloud of smoke that brought difficulties in evacuating the residents.
8 of them ended up in hospital with signs of asphyxia. Thanks to medical help they are out of danger for life.
It took the intervention of 10 fire engines to prevent the fire from escalating. Activation of the fire at the same time in 4 cars and burning of tires caused the smoke to quickly penetrate the stairs to the 9th floor. Residents who first noticed the fire evacuated themselves while others remained trapped on the balcony for several hours.
“It was horror, the worst event I went through I am 76 years old”.
“I live on the third floor. We were the first residents to come out. On the ground floor it was hard to cross there was a lot of smoke”.
“I live on the 8th floor I stayed on the balcony until the stairs were cleared of smoke then I went down“, Say the residents.
The palace elevators and the plumbing and electricity network have been shut down and residents are seeking help to bring the soot-covered apartments back to life.
Police have launched an investigation to uncover the event. The vehicles that are suspected to have been intentionally burned with fuel belong to the builder of the palace, Dritan Llanaj.
Police suspect the incident happened because of the open conflicts he has. We recall that Dritan Llanaj is the brother of another builder Sino Llanaj who was arrested for fraud after selling an apartment to several people.
In January last year, he was injured in Tirana near the palace he was building, after a conflict with his partner.
