In Albania, a “Platform of Principles for the Unification of Democrats” presented on Saturday by the chairman of the PD parliamentary group, Enkelejd Alibeaj, has highlighted the deep division that exists within the PD parliamentary group.
At least 32 deputies, who make up the majority of the group, have signed the document, proving that, although he took control of the party headquarters, former Prime Minister Sali Berisha could not have the broad support of deputies, even after the resignation of the former Mayor Lulzim Basha.
Democrats count 59 seats, 6 of which belong to its allies, who have stayed away from strong clashes in the DP. Mr Berisha appears to have the support of at least 15 lawmakers, while a small group is still openly outspoken.
The platform clearly demands the cessation of the processes initiated by Mr. Berisha and his supporters, starting from the local leadership elections that are being held in the party branches. On the other hand, it is proposed to set up a joint working group with MPs “to draft and monitor the implementation of the detailed plan for the implementation of election processes and party organization.”
“One-sided acts, one-sided way, one-sided and exclusive processes for thousands and thousands of Democrats, do not serve the DP, and consequently not even the interest of the Democrats”, declared Mr. Alibeaj.
But the reaction to the Platform proposal was categorically negative. Flamur Noka, member of the Re-establishment Commission, stated that “we are ready to verify every election procedure with audit groups, if it was conducted in accordance with the DP statute approved by the National Assembly of December 11, 2021 and relevant instructions. “But in no case, and under no circumstances, will the process launched months ago by the Assembly of December 11 and convincingly reconfirmed by the vote of the Democrats in the March 6 elections, stop.”
The day before, the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha had preceded this position: “There is a basic principle, the parliamentary group is the group of PD and not PD, of the parliamentary group. These are the things that are fundamentally divided. The PD deputies are, or will be, according to the new statute, members of the National Council as well as members of the branch presidencies in the areas where they are deputies. But the party structures, as the deputies will elect in the primary, elect their governing bodies. “So, there is no commission that can dictate to those branches to annul the elections they have made.”
Moreover, the appeal in the decision taken by the Court of Tirana, recognizing the acts of the Assembly of December 11, summoned by Mr. Berisha and his supporters, have turned Mr. Alibeaj into a shooting board by the former Prime Minister, accusing him that he is working for the interests of Basha, but also of Prime Minister Rama. Mr. Alibeaj has been openly confronted with Mr. Berisha, while he has publicly stated that the DP can not be led by a person declared “non grata” by the United States.
Mr. Alibeaj reacted to the position of the Re-establishment Commission. Through a Facebook status, he said that “the announced rejection of the request of the vast majority of the Parliamentary Group for unification, the continuation of the predetermined agenda and the lack of a reflection on the situation where the DP is today is clear evidence of who the grouping interests the Democrats and who tends to blindly follow the instructions of the idols. “32 deputies of the PD parliamentary group are not only votes but also the voice of the Democrats who today more than ever want to stop the process of division and start the real union”, said Mr. Alibeaj./VOA
