A double killer has called in his last words for “the world to find peace and love” before receiving the fatal injection yesterday in Missouri, USA.
Carman Deck, 56, was executed in the Bonne Terre federal prison more than 25 years after he killed the elderly couple James and Zelma Long during a 1996 robbery.
He mentioned some incomprehensible words before being injected with 5 grams of pentobarbital, and then took a few last breaths before stopping any movement, writes the British Metro.co.uk
Deck’s execution, the fifth this year in the US, ended within seconds.
His death sentence was included in the controversy following three suspensions of procedural issues.
But his fate was sealed when Gov. Mike Parson refused to pardon him earlier in the week.
In his final written statement, Deck said: “My hope is that one day the world will find peace and we will all learn kindly and love one another.
“We are all part of a journey in life, connected in every way to each other. Please give love, show love, become you love! ‘
Governor Parson said the elderly couple were “innocent victims of Carman Deck violence, so justice was served.”
Deck had been a friend of the Long’s couple’s nephew. He knew them and reportedly knew they were carrying a safe at their home in De Soto, near St. Louis. Louis.
In July 1996, Deck and his sister stopped at their home and, pretending to be asking for directions, entered the house and shot and killed them.
He was later arrested in 1998 and sentenced to death. The decision was later overturned but re-enacted in 2008.
In his appeal for mercy, Deck’s lawyer cited the abuse he had suffered as a child, including beatings and abuse.
“His experiences had transformed him from a nonviolent thief into the person who committed the two horrific murders,” said his lawyer Carlyle, calling the execution “unfair and immoral.”
The number of executions in the US has dropped significantly since reaching its highest number, 98 in 1998.
