At least eight people have been killed and dozens injured after being crushed outside a stadium in the Cameroonian capital, shortly before the start of the African Cup of Nations football match.
According to state television, the crackdown took place on January 24 at the entrance of Olembe Stadium in the capital Jaundi, as the crowd tried to enter to watch the match between the national team of Cameroon and that of the Comoros.
The national broadcaster has said that the authorities and the African Football Confederation are investigating the situation and are trying to understand more details.
Nasser Paul Biya, governor of Cameroon’s central region, has said there could be more deaths.
The football tournament for the Africa Cup of Nations started on January 9th.
After little interest in the first matches, Cameroonian authorities have taken steps to encourage spectators, by opening stadium doors, offering free transport, as well as free tickets.
