With about 20,000 deaths from the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, the Czech Republic has tightened restrictions again, while the health system is at its limits.
The number of infected people since the onset of the pandemic increased by 14,457 within 24 hours.
“Due to the dramatic number of coronavirus infections, the Czech Republic will drastically restrict the freedom of movement of people across the country,” said Interior Minister Jan Hamacek.
From Monday, people will be allowed to leave their respective districts in exceptional cases.
Travel to work, to the doctor and to the authorities is still allowed, provided that people can provide credible evidence.
Prime Minister Andrej Babis warned this week that the country was heading for a “total disaster” in hospitals if infections did not begin to subside.
Parliament passed legislation allowing for wide-ranging restrictions, such as closing shops.
