The hospitable approach of Ukrainian refugees is completely different from the way refugees from the Middle East are treated, whose rights are ignored when they enter Lithuania, via Belarus, said Amnesty International, an international human rights organization.
Refugees from countries such as Iraq and Syria face inhuman treatment, abuse and illegal deportations, the organization said, citing a survey of migrants from two Lithuanian detention centers.
Amnesty has also accused the European Union of ignoring the situation in this member state.
“Lithuanian authorities have detained thousands of people for months in detention centers under military control, and there they have faced torture and other abuses.” it is said in the report of the organization.
“They are being denied access to asylum procedures so that they can return ‘voluntarily’ to the countries from which they fled.”
Lithuania, like European authorities, has accused Belarusian authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately smuggling migrants from the Middle East to its borders with European bloc member states.
REL writes that the border crisis had reached its peak at the end of last summer, as thousands of migrants attempted to penetrate the EU.
