Covid 19 could not escape even the scientists located in the most isolated part of the world, a Belgian research station in Antarctica is facing an outbreak of the disease, despite the fact that its employees are fully vaccinated.
As of Dec. 14, at least 16 of the 25 people living and working at Princess Elisabeth Polar Station have been infected with the coronavirus. “The situation is not dramatic,” Joseph Cheek, project manager for the International Polar Foundation, told the BBC.
But the concern nevertheless remains. Cheek explains that at the moment, those affected are quarantined. He said all station residents were offered the opportunity to depart with a flight scheduled for January 12th.
However, everyone expressed the desire to stay and continue their work. The first positive test was recorded on December 14, among a team that had arrived seven days earlier. Those and others who tested positive were placed in isolation, but the virus continued to circulate.
This is not the first time that research stations in Antarctica have been affected by a coronavirus outbreak. Last year, a section of Chilean military personnel based at the Bernardo O’Higgins research station contracted the disease after sailors on a supply ship tested positive for coronavirus.
