The Covid-19 pandemic and the aging population of Albania are expected to increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes and cancer in the next 10 years.
The “National Health Strategy 2021-2030” published in the Official Gazette states that the increase in cases of non-communicable diseases will be affected by the Covid-19 pandemic due to the increase in undiagnosed cases. Oncologists have claimed that in this period there was an increase in cases with advanced stages of cancer, due to delayed diagnosis for fear of infections.
“The pressure on health services is expected to increase in the long run. The main reasons will be related to the increase of cases which have remained undiagnosed during the pandemic and the increase of long-term cardiovascular and respiratory complications in persons who have passed Covid-19. “The future will also bring other emergencies and it remains a priority for the services for non-communicable diseases to continue to function despite the change of the political purpose of the situation that is caused”, it is said in the strategy.
According to data from the monitoring report of the Ministry of Health, hospitalizations for 2020 fell by 29% compared to a year ago. In cardiology and cardiosurgery the treatments of the patients were reduced by 26%, for the kidney transplants 63%, for the cataracts 21% (the curtain of the eyes which can be removed only with surgical intervention), the screening of the breast cancer 26% also those treated with radiotherapy 8%.
The other factor that will affect the increase of these diseases is the increase of the aging level of the population.
“Non-communicable diseases (STDs) are a growing concern for Albanian society due to the high mortality rate. They have had a significant increase during the period 1990-2010, a trend that is expected to continue in the next 10 years as a result of increasing life expectancy and the aging of the Albanian population. Major non-communicable diseases include cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and cancer. All of these diseases have the same modifiable risk factors, including lifestyle factors (smoking, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle) and some other classic factors (such as: high blood pressure , high blood sugar and high cholesterol) “, is quoted in the document.
The weakening of the chain of preventive services for non-communicable diseases related to tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity may also have an impact on the increase of chronic diseases, which may translate into an increase in cases in the future.
Pocket spending will drop to 35% by 2030
Bribes or out-of-pocket expenses for doctors are projected to fall to 35% of total health spending by 2030. In 2018 by the WHO total out-of-pocket expenditures as a percentage of total health expenditures in Albania were estimated at 44.5%. The Ministry of Health envisages in the strategy that the gradual decrease of out-of-pocket expenses be achieved respectively by the increase of “universal health coverage”, including protection from financial risk, access to quality health care services and access to essential safe, efficient, quality medicines. , affordable and vaccines for everyone. / Monitor /
