The USA delays but does not forget: The former President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes, has now been added to the black list of DASH non grata, for “significant corruption” and “blocking of interstate investigations”.
“Former President Cartes obstructed a major international investigation into organized crime in order to protect himself and his criminal acquaintances,” said in the statement of the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.
“These actions confirmed Cartes’ involvement with foreign terrorist organizations and other groups listed by the United States,” it added.
Cartes himself denied the allegations, which he called baseless and unfair in a tweet.
The 66-year-old owns a tobacco company and ran a veritable retail empire while leading the South American country from 2013-2018.
He is believed to be one of Paraguay’s richest men today and was seen as the most likely candidate to win the presidential election to be held in December.
His three children have also ended up on the US blacklist. Earlier in the year the country’s former Attorney General, Arnaldo Giuzzio, accused Cartes of smuggling cigarettes into Brazil using drug trafficking channels as well as money laundering and illicit enrichment, charges that were dismissed at the time.
