Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, convicted today of corruption, will most likely serve a one-year sentence behind bars at his wife Carla Bruni’s giant villa, although he was found guilty of attempting to bribe a judge.
He was sentenced to three years in prison, two of which were suspended, while Judge Christine Mée said he could be allowed to serve the sentence at home, equipped with the electronic ankle bracelet.
This means that Sarkozy will spend 12 months of his sentence in the luxury villa of Paris of his wife Carla, the 53-year-old millionaire former singer, model and actress.
Carla owns her € 3 million home in Villa Montmorency – the exclusive 19th-century building in the French capital.
Inside the three-bedroom apartment, former pop star Bruni has her own recording studio. Former Les Miserables scribe Victor Hugo and actor Gérard Depardieu used to live in this apartment.
Sarkozy will also remain free during the appeal process, which could take several years.
The last French president to be sentenced to prison was Marshal Philippe Pétain, a Nazi collaborator during World War II.
