NATO member states are sending thousands of troops, fighter jets and ships to their allies in Eastern Europe amid rising tensions with Russia over the deployment of more than 100,000 Russian troops on the border with Ukraine.
The West fears an imminent Russian invasion, which the Kremlin denies. Although the alliance has made it clear that its soldiers will not fight against the Russians, there seems to be great fear of an escalation of the conflict, which would endanger the members of the alliance themselves.
Four Danish F-16 fighter jets landed in Lithuania last week with the aim of strengthening NATO’s air patrol mission in the Baltic.
Since the forcible annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, NATO has deployed 4,000 to 5,000 troops in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The United States has put 8,500 troops on standby.
US President Joe Biden said he would soon send US troops to Eastern Europe and NATO countries. The United States already has tens of thousands of troops stationed in Europe, mostly in Germany and Britain.
According to one scenario, some of them would gradually move to NATO’s eastern allies. France has announced plans to deploy hundreds of troops to Romania.
Spain, the Netherlands and Germany are also considering sending troops, planes and warships to allied Eastern European countries.
Britain has already supplied Ukraine with about 2,000 anti-tank missiles and is expected to deploy more troops this week, potentially doubling its current commitment of about 1,150 troops.
