Turn in Washington: A CIA report makes it very clear what role Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman played in the case of the murder of journalist Khashoggi, thinks Rainer Sollich.
Following the publication of the CIA report, the latest suspicions have been averted: The assassination of journalist critical of the government Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 in Istanbul took place by order or at least with the knowledge of Saudi Prince Mohamed bin Salman. This has not been an out-of-control action of a murderous state commando without the knowledge and message “from above”, as the Saudi royal court has tried to fill the minds of the world and its citizens.
Unforgivable violation of civilization
In this way it is clear: MbS, as the prince calls himself, bears full responsibility for a cruel political crime in the past decade: The journalist was trapped and killed because the authorities in Riyadh did not like the constant criticism that published in the US media Jamal Khashoggi.
His body was then apparently sawed to pieces and burned with acid: A horrific and unimaginable “mafia-style” assassination that has tarnished Saudi Arabia’s reputation in the region and around the world. And it is also a grave violation of civilization, which can not be justified by anything and which the world should never accept.
Ruler with two faces
While MbS as heir to the throne and as a ruler acting today unofficially has merits, especially in terms of a gradual but visible liberalization of society and a significant appreciation of the role of women in society. There are many young Saudis who see in him a promising figure and honor him as a popstar.
But Mohamed bin Salman has another side, which is morally quite heavy: He has his hands stained with blood. Not only with the blood of Jamal Khashoggi, but also with the blood of many other innocent people, who lost their lives in the ongoing war with neighboring Yemen from Saudi airstrikes on schools or homes.
The current President of the United States, Donald Trump, knew all this very well – and yet he has defended the MBS as a supposedly exemplary partner in the Middle East. Trump’s successor, Joe Biden, is now trying, with the help of the CIA report, and with particular emphasis on human rights, to politically isolate Mohamed bin Salman and establish relations on a new basis.
But Biden is drawn to direct sanctions against the crown prince, who has meanwhile been declared an undesirable person in many EU countries. And here the danger is quite clear: Under the MBS Saudi Arabia risks continuing to remain as a pariah state, suffering as a result the weakening of its interests./DW
