Last minute touches on a white dress, a final powder and let the show begin. A group of colored stylists, inspired by the movement The life of people of color matters, are making history at Milan Fashion Week.
After a long battle to improve diversity on the Italian catwalks, a group of five colored stylists made their debut on Wednesday evening, opening the fashion shows for women, for the autumn-winter season. All the catwalks this season have been recorded in advance, due to the coronavirus, but AFP has had exclusive access to their preparation, at the Circolo Filologico, in Milan, not far from the famous La Scala.
“Is the opening of the fashion week a victory? I would say, it is a first step in this direction. “In the long run, we need to make the society we live in understand that Made in Italy is a brand that has nothing to do with skin color, but with talent.”
Michelle Ngonmo, is the co-founder of the collective called The Life of People of Color Matters, in Italian Fashion. The collective got its name from the movement of the same name that swept the US last year and crossed its borders reaching even Europe. On an individual level, the opening of Milan Fashion Week is a dream come true for stylists, all Italian but born in different African countries.
